Cher has announced that she will be coming out of her retirement after 3 years, to take up a residency at Caesars Palace Las Vegas. Her performance will take part in the 4,300 seater Colosseum Theatre, with 18 dancers and aerialists as well as of course fabulous costumes, video and special effects.

The run will last for 200 shows over 30 months and alternates with performances from Elton John and Bette Midler, starting from May 6th for a month followed by a return in August. Ticket prices will range from $95 to $250 for the 4 time a week show.

This is great news for Las Vegas, as yet another superstar performer graces the city surely to appear on the massive advertising billboards and screens after Celine Dion’s residency finished back in December.

Former Miss Nevada Beauty Queen Arrested

February 7, 2008

Former Miss Nevada beauty queen, Katie Rees’ has been arrested and jailed, on charges relating to traffic offenses and resisting a police officer charge. The 23 year old is being held at the Clark County jail awaiting a court appearance this Friday, after being stopped whilst driving at around 3 am on Wednesday.

Miss Rees allegedly became aggressive towards a police office kicking out and throwing an elbow, although it is believed there were no injuries. She has been charged with speeding, driving with a suspended license, driving a vehicle with suspended license plates and failing to produce proof of insurance in addition to resisting a police office.

The former Miss Nevada 2007 was stripped of her title after racy photo’s of her were published, including simulated oral sex and a lesbian kiss with a friend while in a club in Florida. Miss USA co-owner Donald Trump stripped her of her crown after this, unlike the pardon he issued Miss USA 2006 Tara Connor after allegations of her using cocaine.

Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino on Fire

January 26, 2008

Big news today, as the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino caught fire! The blaze started from from the centre section of the hotel and spread across the roof with debris falling to the ground below.

The hotel is reportedly being evacuated, although it’s not believed there are any serious injuries, although some people have been taken to hospital for minor injuries such as smoke inhalation. 120 firefighters are believed to have been involved in dealing with the fire.

Fortunately it seems that this event has passed without any serious incidence, probably partly due to the much stricter fire codes in place since the 1980 fire at the old MGM Grand which took 87 lives.

Las Vegas Monorail Users Increase

January 22, 2008

The Las Vegas monorail saw a large increase in riders last year, with almost 8 million users, nearly a million more than in 2006. Unfortunately it is still not turning an operating profit from the fares received, and in fact this month had to use cash reserves in order to pay a schedule bond payment. It is estimated that these reserves will enable the monorail to run until 2010.

The operators are still trying to secure financing to fund an extension to McCarran airport, which I believe would be a great idea and would raise higher even still the amount of users the monorail has. Heck, even I might use it then!

Ricky Hatton Loses to Floyd Mayweather

December 9, 2007

After all the hype and build up in the weeks and particularly the days before the great fight, English hearts were broken when Floyd Mayweather beat Ricky Hatton in the 10th round at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas las night.

There was a real expectancy from Hattons fans all over the UK and in Sin City that he would win this fight against all the odds, and you could tell from the chanting inside the arena that he had great support. To be honest I though the fight was a bit of a let down, Hatton tried hard but Mayweather simply took it all in his stride and soaked up the pressure.

Ricky Hatton should have been able to see this after a few rounds and maybe tried changing his tactics, but finally the endless punches he was throwing wore him down and Mayweather took advantage of this with some hard punches to Hatton. In the tenth round Mayweather ‘took care of business’ and finished Hatton off, with Ricky left simply to say ’sorry’ to his fans.
